after last month’s kitchen makeover, i’ve been itching to decorate the rest of my apartment. it’s a dream of mine to have a fully-furnished “pinterest” apartment. i came pretty close with my previous one, but there were definitely parts left unfinished. it’s become somewhat of a summer project for me to makeover different rooms of the apartment, and this week’s room was the bathroom, or rather, bathrooms (plural).
i’ll mostly be focusing on the makeover of the master bathroom as that is the one i decorated more heavily anyway!
the vision
like the rest of my apartment (and entire existence, really), the bathroom had to be pink. not a nauseating Barbie pink, but a warm, soft blush pink. i also wanted to incorporate more wood textures, to make the white marble counters seem a little less sterile, and to give off a beachy vibe. maybe it’s because of the current season, but i’ve been into the whimsy, beach aesthetic. i think it works well for a bathroom as well because of the towels and inherent water theme.
aesthetic:
- Color: warm pinks & white
- Texture: bamboo wood, marble counters, fluffy towels
- Theme: pinterest self-care, “coconut girl” aesthetic
- Accents: whimsy flora, honey yellow, woven yarn
creating an inspo board
i’ve been building my bathroom board for months on pinterest (check it out here!). when making an inspo board, pinterest makes it pretty easy. usually i’ll start my apartment inspo search with [descriptor word] + “aesthetic” + [room]. so for the bathroom i searched terms like “pink aesthetic bathroom”, “girly aesthetic bathroom”, “self-care aesthetic bathroom”. once you save a few images you like, you should have no problem finding similar images as pinterest is quick to tailor your feed. but once you have a decent board built, what do you do with that?
i try to look for similarities between images. what do they all have in common that drew my interest? in my search, i noticed i saved a lot of bathrooms with pink towels, products displayed on the counter, and storage crates/baskets. this gave me a good starting point to build off of.
utilizing wall space
one thing about me: i don’t like unused space. in the bathroom, there is a lot of empty space, it just so happens to be on the wall. in my bathroom there is a big, blank wall that the singular towel bar hangs on. i knew that this empty space had the potential to be much more. (also i lowkey need more room to hang towels so…) one bar was NOT going to cut it.
i found this towel ladder rack on Amazon, and it was the perfect size to fit inside the apartment towel bar. ladder racks like these are meant to stand at an angle, balancing against the wall. i loved the height and dimension it’d to the blank wall, but realistically i knew that something leaning against the wall would look too cluttered for the small space. also, i would totally trip and knock it down (real reason). so i wanted one that could fit inside the towel bar to prevent any toppling situations.
another big, empty wall space is the wall surrounding the toilet. i decided to put shelf with an extra towel rack there so i could store things like extra toilet paper and hand towels.
for the guest bathroom, i found this stainless steel towel bar that uses a sticker adhesive to mount. i’m always looking for renter-friendly options to minimize the amount of holes i’ll need to patch upon move out, but i’m always skepticle about the strength of sticker adhesives, especially when it needs to hold weight. i’ve had this towel up for weeks now and i have to say i’m impressed. it hasn’t had any issues bearing the weight of two full-body bath towels thus far!
change out the towels / shower curtain
speaking of towels, try switching them out with colored or patterned ones for a quick and easy vibe change!
they work much like bedsheets, in that they’re the biggest, most-obvious color blocks in the entire room. towels come in all shapes and sizes (literally), so changing them out with different colors or patterns will completely transfom the bathroom. i found this blush pink waffle set at Homegoods, and paired it with some of the white bath towels i already had for a nice contrast. i switched out my bathmat with a round, woven one to create variance. you can mix and match until you find the perfect combination of colors and textures!
the counter: displaying your favorite products
i’m one of those people who needs everything in front of them to know what they have. same goes for skincare. good thing a lot of skincare brands take into consideration their packaging!
displaying my favorite, daily products is one of my favorite ways to decorate the bathroom!
save old product packaging
creating clusters of products with matching color scemes is so satisfying to me. but i’m not going to go out of my way to only use products that use a pink packaging. as much as i wish weren’t the case, sometimes the best products quality-wise have the most uninspired packaging.
so sometimes i will save and reuse cute packaging to upkeep the aesthetic lol. just make sure to thorughly wash out the original packaging, as certain products cannot be mixed with other products. you want to be careful not to accidently combine ingredients that do not go together.
counter & shower storage
trays and baskets are going to be your go-to options for storing and displaying everything. i’ve thrifted a lot of pretty glass trays from Goodwill. marble and steel trays are sleek and match common bathroom interiors. i use stick-on wall baskets for shower products as i don’t have a bathtub or shelves to place things on.
drawer storage
storage containers and drawer dividers are a MUST for me. we store so many different items in the bathroom, many of them small in size, that are suceptable to being lost in the abyss of a drawer or under sink cabinet. not on my watch. containers are truly a lifesaver.
i get most of mine at Daiso or Homegoods, but Amazon also has a wide selection of affordable sets.
